Drip, Drip, Drip

Tim Donaghy's drip-drip-drip revelations have been covered before on TCG, and his latest revelation, that specific games were influenced and specific NBA players were targeted/favored, has been generating a lot of news lately. The biggest piece of news, however, is the relative shrug of the shoulders of NBA fans. That is to say, "so what else is new?" While the league continues with its non-denial denials, it has a major credibility problem on its hands, and that problem is not any greater than it is in SLC, where Jazz fans have forever felt slighted because of Utah's small market and uncool reputation.

I'm not big on conspiracy theories, but I do think there is a serious problem with NBA officiating. One need look no further than the difference between games 2 and 3 of the finals to see the lack of consistent officiating and the way the refs are affecting the outcome of the games. Add in the game ending no call the Lakers got against the Spurs and Kobe's ridiculous number of trips to the line against the Jazz and the conspiracy theories start to look more and more credible. On top of all that, how does the NBA react? By sticking its head in the sand and pretending that if it doesn't acknowledge the problem it will go away.

The NBA needs to follow Phil Jackson's advice and have NBA officiating run by an organization other than the NBA. Conspiracy theory or not, the officiating in the playoffs has been ridiculously bad.
