A Leap Into The Future...

As an NBA fan, we've heard numerous rumors about how NBA teams are moving and posturing for the Free Agent Market of 2010. Up to 14 or 15 teams are rearranging their rosters in order to have the necessary cap space for 2010. That's the magical year! The list of potential-available free agents for that year is endless. LeBron, DWade, Dirk, Rip, Kobe Amare, Bosh and McGrady could all be available for the picking in 2010, among many others.

With all of this activity happening in anticipation of that great year, how will the Jazz be affected? Here are my thoughts pertaining to the Jazz and the 2010 Free Agent Market:

1) The Jazz will have a difficult time trading AK47. No NBA team wants to jeopardize their cap space for 2010. Kirilenko's contract runs through the 2010-11 season and will pay AK a "gi-normous" sum of $17.8 million. Will anyone be willing to take on his contract? Certainly, big market teams such as New York, New Jersey, Miami, Dallas and Detriot are preparing for 2010.
2) The big free agent market for the Jazz may be next summer. Carlos Boozer has a player option after this coming season. Likewise, Memo Okur will have an early termination option. Both could most certainly opt out. It's possible! I think we should expect that the Booz will be free after '08-09 and Memo will wait 'til the glorious summer of 2010. If we happen to lose the Booz, should we wait to sign someone else the following year in 2010?
3) Let's wrap up Deron as soon as possible! It'll be nice to have DWill locked up as our point guard for the next several seasons. He could be a super attractive asset in the future for any potential free agent looking to come to Utah.
4) The good news is... we own the 2010 1st Round pick of the New York Knicks. In a long-forgotten "Gugliotta" trade, the Jazz acquired a Knicks pick that has been protected over the past several years. It'll be non-protected in 2010. Could the Knicks still stink by then? Absolutely!...since they TOO are posturing for the Free Agent Market of 2010. As a Jazz fan, that's probably too far away to envision.

5) Enjoy the Team this coming season, since it probably won't be the same after '09. Can we contend for a championship next season? I hope so. We must get "amped-up" to make a "RUN". Otherwise, change could tear into our team after this next season.
If only we could step into a 1.21 Gigawatt "Time-Travel" Dolorean to find out what happens to the Jazz in 2010...

Good post Guru. Signing D-Will for the long term guarantees that we will competitive both in the standings and the free agent market for years to come. Everyone wants to play with a great point guard because he will get you easy buckets and victories.

What are the chances we unload AK on Golden St? They have a trade exception to work with, need some defense and Nellie loves big guys who can handle the ball and shoot from long range. I could even see Nellie running the offense through AK, like the Russian national team does, and having some success.

I think if GS falls short in the FA market with the likes of Josh Smith, Igoudala, Maggette, etc, then maybe Kirilenko could be an option for them. I know they'd probably like to bring back Monta Ellis and Biedrins. If they strike out on the market, I'm sure Nellie would love to have AK. I agree...they're a possibility. GS would certainly get more out of AK's ability than the Jazz would/do.

Rising Stock and I were just discussing last night how next year is our final season with this Jazz team. After we lock up D Will, there is just no way to keep AK and Booze on the team.

Here's to hoping Fes develops and we have the ability to stick it to the Lakers and Cs next year!

Everyone is talking about Boozer opting out (which he will) and leaving town (debateable), but Okur can opt our as well next year. Basically everyone that gets PT on our roster needs to get paid within the next two years, except Kirlenko and Korver. Ch-ch-ch-changes.
